On Sunday, Scottie Scheffler’s FedEx Cup Playoffs season came to an end with a tie for fourth place at East Lake. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood finally crossed the finish line and won his first PGA Tour event.

Scheffler didn’t end another season that made history with a second FedEx Cup win. Still, he continued to prove that he was the best player in the world, and people started to compare him to Tiger Woods because of how good he was.

For Scheffler, the start to the season was rough because he was still getting used to playing baseball after hurting his hand while making homemade ravioli over the off-season. How did that “bumpy” start? This is what it looked like: T9-T25-T3-T11-T20-T2-4-T8. In a unique way, Scheffler then won the CJ Cup.

Two weeks later, he won the PGA Championship, and in June, he won the Memorial.

To cap off his season, he won the Open Championship and the BMW Championship. Scheffler had the most strokes earned from the tee to the green, off the tee, and on the approach. He was also the best at scrambling, scoring, making birdies, and getting back on track.

Is that all? Not quite.

Scheffler didn’t win the FedEx Cup title on Sunday because he hit his first tee shot out of bounds and then his second shot into the water on No. 15 for a double bogey, but he still finished tied for fourth place. Justin Ray says that was Scheffler’s 14th straight top-eight finish this year. That is the longest streak since Ben Hogan did it 14 times in the early 1950s.

Scheffler hasn’t been outside the top eight on a leaderboard since the Players Championship, where he came in T20 during a trying title defense.

Scheffler also shot 21 straight rounds in the 60s at the end of the year, which is tied for the longest run in PGA Tour history.

Scheffler won eight times in 2024, including the Masters and an Olympic gold medal. It would have been natural for his scores to drop, as they did in 2023, even though he always played very well.

They didn’t, though.

Instead, Scheffler had two dominant games at major championships, bringing his career total to four. He also created an iconic moment with his game-winning chip-in at the BMW and continued to raise his standing in the history of the game.

He said on Sunday at East Lake, “I think after a year like ’24, I think sometimes people’s expectations and stuff can change.” “Not much changes for me.” I’m not happy with where I am right now. I try to improve myself all the time. That seems like a normal part of the game to me.

Being able to always try to get better is one of the things I love most about golf. I think I got better at putting this year than I did last year. That’s the one part of the game I’ve been working on the most. Some good things have come from all the work Phil Kenyon and I have been doing together. That’s why I won more events this year, yes.

One of the many things that make Scheffler unique is that he always plays with the same level of energy. He learned this from playing a round with Tiger Woods at the 2020 Masters.

“The most impressive thing about playing with Tiger was how seriously he took every shot,” Scheffler said last week at East Lake. “I’ve talked to a lot of guys about that.” “Tiger was just different. The way he took every shot made it seem like it was the last one he would ever make.”

Tiger and I have only played together once in an event. I played with him in the 2020 COVID Masters. I think he made a 10 on the 12th hole and birdied five of the last six holes. I thought, “What is this guy still playing for?” Four or five times, he’s won to title. At this point, the best he can do is end around 20th. The intensity he brought to every round was something I respected, and I try to match that.

The sport has been taken over by Scheffler, and even the people who are meant to be his main competitors are struggling to keep up with him. Even for the best players in the world, the fact that it’s going to happen can be discouraging.

I don’t think anyone in the golf world thought someone as powerful as Tiger would come along so quickly, and now Scottie is kind of taking Tiger’s place,” World No. 3 Xander Schauffele said at the Open. He’s not even on the run. He’s been killing it for more than two years. It stinks for us to see his name on the list because he’s so hard to beat.

Even though Rory McIlroy has won three times this season, he said that two of those wins were during Scheffler’s “rust” period. He knows that Scottie is ahead of everyone else.

At the Open, McIlroy said, “None of us could hang with Scottie this week.” “He is a great player.” This week, he’s been great. He really has been the best for a few years now. We’re all trying to reach the same level as him. If you look at the game’s past, you could say that Scottie is one of only two or three players who has been on a run like the one he’s been on for the last 24 to 36 months. Unbelievable how amazing.

Over the last two or three years, he’s been truly amazing. I already told you that all you can do is admire and tip your hat.

That’s all golf can do after that. As you watch, you might be wondering when the Scottie Scheffler train will stop moving.
