Donovan Mitchell of the Cavaliers has done something crazy that makes him join LeBron James and Michael Jordan in the ranks of great athletes.
After losing the first two games of their second-round series at home to the Indiana Pacers, the 64-win Cleveland Cavaliers were in a tough spot. Because Evan Mobley and Darius Garland weren’t playing, Indiana was able to take advantage.
But that has only brought out the best in Donovan Mitchell, who is getting better and better with each game in this year’s playoffs. The Cavaliers needed a big game in Game 3 to avoid falling behind 3-0, so Mitchell scored 43 points to lead his team to a 126-104 win.
Mitchell has been so active in looking for his shot, taking advantage of the Pacers’ weak defense to score in a lot of different ways.
This time, his three-point shot was also working; he made 14 of 29 field goals and 5 of 13 three-point shots. He also kept putting pressure on the basket by going to the paint all the time and drawing 14 free throws, making 10 of them.
According to Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints, Spida became the first player in Cavs history to score 90 or more points in two games, following up his 48-point gem in Game 2 with another crazy scoring explosion. Mitchell made history by doing this.
As the eighth player in NBA history to score 29 or more field goals and make nine or more free throws in three straight playoff games, he joined a small group that includes LeBron James and Michael Jordan.
The fact that Mobley and Garland aren’t playing has led to more shots for Mitchell. But even though they played again in Game 3, the Cavaliers knew that their star player had been on fire and should be able to run the offense however he pleased as they try to recover from a rough start to the series against the Pacers.
Donovan Mitchell stops the Pacers from making a run in Game 3 for the Cavaliers
The Pacers had cut the Cavs’ lead to 11 points with 8:26 left in the fourth quarter of Game 3. This made me think of the Pacers’ comeback in Game 2. Still, after a break, Donovan Mitchell stopped any hopes of another come-from-behind win.
Mitchell grabbed the offensive board on the first play after the timeout and then made a great turnaround midrange jump shot. After the Pacers made a basket on the next play, he made a great shot from deep to make the score 14–11.
Then, after a defensive stop, Mitchell cut into the lane and made it possible for Max Strus to make a three-pointer. That made the lead 17 points, and they never looked back after that.
Fans of the Cavaliers are very hopeful that they can come back from being down 2-0 in the game to beat the Pacers. Mitchell is a very good player.
