The University of Virginia (UVA) is honoring three football players who were tragically killed in a campus shooting last month. D’Sean Perry, Devin Chandler and Lavel Davis Jr. were killed on November 13th when a gunman open fired on a charter bus returning to campus from a class trip to Washington, D.C. Two other students were also injured and have since been released from the hospital.

The suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., was arrested after a manhunt and charged with murder. In order to honor the three slain students, UVA has approved posthumous degrees for each of them. The degrees were printed and shared with their respective family members during the funerals held in their hometowns.

Lavel Davis Jr., a third-year student from Ridgeville, South Carolina, majored in African American and African Studies. He was set to graduate this month and was a beloved member of the school’s community. Fellow student, Sarah Roan, stated, “Lavel was a great friend and an even better person. We had a lot of classes together and I’ll miss his presence in the classroom.”

D’Sean Perry was a fourth-year student from Norfolk, Virginia. He was a sociology major and was described as having a “heart of gold”. Perry was actively involved in the community and was always willing to help out those in need.

Finally, Devin Chandler was a third-year student from Hollywood, Maryland. He was majoring in psychology and was an active member in the school’s football team. Before the tragic shooting, Chandler was looking forward to graduating from UVA and was planning to continue his education in the field of psychology.

The loss of these three students has been felt throughout the entire school community. UVA officials have stated, “The entire university mourns the loss of these three young men and is deeply saddened by their tragic deaths. We are grateful for the opportunity to honor their memory with posthumous degrees.”

The posthumous degrees awarded to these three students are a reminder of the impact they had on the UVA community. Although they are no longer here, their memories will live on in the hearts of their family, friends, and fellow students.
