October 18 – Neymar tore the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee during a World Cup test against Uruguay, and will need surgery to fix the problem. The forward will likely be out for a few months as a result of the injury.
The 31-year-old fell after a fight for the ball with Nicolas de la Cruz of Uruguay in the 44th minute of Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Brazil. He was holding his hurt left leg and calling for medical help while his teammates watched in worry.
Neymar, who signed with Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal in August, left the pitch on a stretcher after being treated for a while. An MRI scan on Wednesday revealed the injuries.
A statement from Brazil’s football body (CBF) on Wednesday said, “The striker will have surgery on a date that has not yet been set to fix the injuries.”
“The medical department of the Brazilian national team … and Al Hilal are in constant contact and are aligned in the athlete’s recovery.”
Neymar said he was annoyed that he had to miss more games because of another injury so soon after having surgery on his ankle.
He had surgery on his right ankle earlier this year and had to take months to heal before he could sign a two-year deal with Al-Hilal, where he had only played five games this season.
He wrote on Instagram, “It’s the worst and saddest time.” “I know I’m strong, but I’ll need my family and friends even more this time.”
“It’s not easy to go through injury and surgery, imagine going through it all again after four months of recovery.”
Neymar has had a lot of injuries over the course of his career. He missed three long periods of time with his old team Paris St. Germain because of injuries to his right foot.
He hurt his back in the 2014 World Cup quarterfinal win over Colombia, so he couldn’t play in the 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-finals.
In 2018, injuries again made it hard for him to reach his goal of winning the World Cup. Neymar hurt his right ankle early that year, which put stress on the fifth metatarsal in his foot.
At the end of the 2017–18 French season, he missed 16 games for PSG. He was also never fully fit because he played through pain for Brazil in Russia until they were knocked out by Belgium in the quarterfinals.
The forward got hurt in the same way in 2019, 2021, and at the World Cup last year in Qatar.
Al-Hilal paid an estimated €90 million ($95 million) for the forward, so this illness will hurt them a lot.
The team hasn’t lost in the Saudi Pro League and is in first place by one point. After two games, they are also in first place in their AFC Champions League group.
