The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers played in the 2024 Super Bowl on Sunday, February 11. The national anthem was sung by country music star Reba McEntire.
The song is important to the three-time Grammy winner. McEntire’s website says that folks first heard her sing at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma in 1974, when she sang the national anthem. Since then, she’s sung the national anthem at many other events, but this was her first time doing it at the Super Bowl.
“This is not my first rodeo!” “When I sang the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo 50 years ago, I never thought I’d be singing it at the Super Bowl today,” she said on Sunday before the game.
About three and a half hours before the game started, McEntire walked into Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl with her partner, Rex Linn, holding hands. She was wearing a puffy grey fake fur coat.
“I’m honoured to be a part of something as big and historic as the Super Bowl coming to Las Vegas for the first time,” McEntire said when the show was revealed.
As McEntire sang the national anthem, service members with flags stood behind her. Jets flew over Allegiant Stadium.
In January, McEntire talked to the hosts of “CBS Mornings” about how she was getting ready for the show.
“You just warm up like you do a concert and sing it about five or six times, and get in there, and do it,” McEntire stated.
The singer said that her boss told her about the chance.
And I said, “Oh my gosh.” He told me that they wanted me to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. “Let me think about that,” McEntire said in January. “My boyfriend Rex Linn, who loves football a lot, said, ‘Yes, she’ll do it.'” Of course.’ That’s where we are now.
Aside from Post Malone, who sang “America the Beautiful,” Andra Day also sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before the game. Usher will be on the halftime show.
It was Chris Stapleton who sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl last year.
On Sunday, February 11, Super Bowl LVIII will be live on CBS, Nickelodeon, and Paramount+. It will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
