Even though Lionel Messi played for the first time in almost a month, Inter Miami lost badly to Monterrey in the second game of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals. They put on a show at Estadio BBVA, and their social media team had fun on the web as well.

A few minutes into the game, the big teams in Liga MX made fun of Messi on their official English-language account. “GoAT (Greatest of all Tabasco),” @WeAreRayados wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

There is a picture in the post of Messi and Jesus Gallardo battling for the ball. Gallardo was born in the Mexican state of Tedesco. In the end, the left back got the home team’s third goal of the night.

After beating Barcelona 3-1 (5-2 overall) and moving on to the semifinals, Monterrey made another sly dig at Messi, this time on their official Spanish-language account. An X-post says, “What a great game you played, Toro!,” and it has a picture of defender Victor Guzman celebrating while Messi looks sad.

The English account also shared a picture that looked the same, but it showed Gerardo Arteaga next to the former Barcelona star. They made fun of Inter Miami custodian Drake Callender for giving up the first goal.

How Gerardo Martino felt when Inter Miami was eliminated

“A dream is over because we lost today,” Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino told the press. Our goal was to move forward in this game and be able to do what Columbus Crew did yesterday here in Monterrey. The Conca champions this year have the best teams in Mexico. It’s about América, Monterrey, and Tigres. You can’t include Pachuca in that because their whole idea is to bring up very young players.

After making fun of Major League Soccer’s roster rules, the Herons’ manager said that the best Liga MX teams are much better than the best MLS teams.

“These three teams most often have the best players and are very strong.” As long as Major League Soccer doesn’t loosen up the rules a bit so that we can have bigger rosters to cover for injuries and penalties, Mexican teams will still have an edge, Martino said.
