So far, the 2025 PGA Championship has been very interesting. Jhonattan Vegas had a two-shot lead after the first round after shooting a 7-under 64 on Thursday.

He was a surprise, but not the only one. The list didn’t have most of the best players in the world.

Now there’s at least one name that a casual golf fan might know.

Max Homa had a great time at the Charlotte, North Carolina, Quail Hollow Club. Vegas had 7-under, and Homa had the same. They both went into the weekend at 5-under total.

With his work, he moved up 70 spots on the rankings. The PGA Tour Communications Department on X says that his 64 is the lowest score he has ever had in 23 major title rounds. This makes it even more interesting.

Homa got off to a fast start on Friday on the back nine

The par-5 10th was his first hole of the day that he birdied. After a string of pars, he got another shot at 13.

But what he did on the 14th hole, a par-4 that could be driven, made a lot of noise.

One foot away from a hole-in-one double eagle, Homa hit the green of the par-4 with his shot.

Of course, he would tap in for Eagle, and things began to look much better.

Then Homa played the tough three-hole “Green Mile” in one under to finish in thirty. At 3, he got another par-breaker. On the par-3 fourth, he dropped his first shot of the day.

He got back on track, though, and played his last five holes at 1-under to finish with a score of 7-under 64.

When you think about how hard top players have had it at Quail Hollow, that round was truly amazing.

Max Homa has won six times on the PGA Tour and looked like he was going to become one of the best players in the world.

It’s just that his game has been bad for about a year now. The Official World Golf Rankings now put him at number 78, and the 2025 FedEx Cup rankings put him at number 109.

All of that happened at the same time that Homa and his long-time friend and caddie, Joe Greiner, broke up earlier this year.

After Friday’s round at the 107th PGA Championship, all of that probably doesn’t seem important anymore.

Without a doubt, he will be teeing off in one of the last groups on Saturday afternoon.
