And Balotelli’s old teammate Florian Thauvin has now said that the Italy striker got sick by accidentally eating too much harissa.

The strong North African sauce is made from oil, seeds, herbs, spices, and hot chilies.

Thauvin, a winger who used to play for Newcastle, was with Marseille when Balotelli joined the Ligue 1 club in 2019.

Thauvin, who is 31 years old, remembered: “Mario Balotelli signed with Marseille.” We were having lunch at a training camp before the game.

It was Adil Rami’s time at the club, and he always asked for harissa to be on the table. That’s why the cook always gave Adil a bowl of harissa. The Balotelli showed up.

It was his first pre-match camp with the club, and everything was new for him. “He helped himself to pasta like a good Italian would. It looked like tomato sauce to him. He put as much harissa as possible on his pasta and ate a lot of it.

“Us other players looked at one another, and thought: ‘That’s hot stuff – and he’s taken a lot of it.’ “We thought he was great at what he did. Since we didn’t know him, we thought he knew and there was no problem. As soon as Mario started to eat, he started to cry, and sweat started running down his face.
