Gus Poyet, Glenn Hoddle, Jimmy Greaves, and William Gallas. There aren’t that many elite players who have played for both Chelsea and Tottenham.
A competition between two cities that goes back to the 1960s. The FA Cup final in 1967, also called the “Cockney Cup final,” was won by Spurs by a score of 2-1. It was the start of a feud between the two London clubs that has grown worse over time.
The famous “Battle of the Bridge” in 2016 will be the event that younger people will remember most. Tottenham wanted to win the Premier League for the first time, but they knew that if they didn’t get three points at Stamford Bridge, Leicester City would win the title. Mark Clattenburg was the judge that day. He ended up giving out 12 yellow cards.
In the end, Eden Hazard tied the game for Chelsea with a goal in the 83rd minute that made the Bridge go crazy. A goal that both sets of fans will remember forever, but for very different reasons.
So it’s not surprising that there isn’t a lot of direct transfer action between these two teams who hate each other. But this summer, there is a rumor that won’t go away, and it’s important to say that’s what it is right now. Harry Kane is going to Chelsea.
For Spurs fans, it was impossible. But Mauricio Pochettino is set to become Chelsea’s new permanent head coach before the 2023/2024 season. Is there a chance that the boss and striker could work together again?
People say that Pochettino and Kane had a great time working together at Tottenham for the five years they were there. Tim Sherwood gave Harry Kane his Spurs start, but Mauricio Pochettino is often credited with helping him become the world-class striker he is now.
Chelsea is looking for a guy who can go out and score between 25 and 30 goals per season. Kai Havertz has only scored seven goals in the Premier League this season, but he is the club’s leading scorer in the top division. That’s just not good enough, especially since the goals haven’t been talked about too much.
Raheem Sterling is next on the list. He scored twice against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, giving him six goals for the season. The next three goals are scored by Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount, and Joao Felix. In 35 Premier League games, Chelsea has scored 36 goals, which is just over one per game.
In September 2022, Thomas Tuchel brought Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the club to try to help Chelsea score more goals. The club fired Tuchel a week later, though, so he didn’t get to work with Aubameyang for very long.
The Gabonese striker was supposed to be the player who would take most of the chances made by Chelsea’s attack. So the search for the No. 9 goal scorer goes on, and who better than Kane?
The 29-year-old has scored 210 goals in 315 Premier League games for Spurs. Kane has won three Golden Boots in the Premier League, but despite all of his personal achievements, Tottenham hasn’t won a big trophy with him yet.
With the way Chelsea is playing right now, it doesn’t look like they’ll be adding to their collection of trophies any time soon. However, if Kane can come in and be the face of the owners’ long-term plan, they’d be well on their way. Pochettino would love to work with Kane again as soon as he gets to Chelsea.
Just think about how many chances Chelsea has had this season and picture Kane scoring on them. The Blues would be in a much better spot in the Premier League than they are now, and we would talk about the team in a very different way.
People have said for years that Manchester City doesn’t need a “trademark No. 9” because they have been so successful since Pep Guardiola took over. But they went and got Erling Haaland last summer, and now, less than a year later, they are trying to win the treble and are in a good place to do so.
Even an offer from Chelsea is not likely to be accepted by Tottenham. But if the Blues can make Kane nervous in any way, why shouldn’t they?
