NWA Online says he has died…
Walt Garrison has died. As an Oklahoma State Cowboy, he led the Big 8 in running. He also won a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys and participated as a rodeo cowboy when he wasn’t playing football. He was 79 years old.
In a story found on Thursday, the NFL team said that Garrison had died the previous night. It didn’t say what killed the person.
Garrison was picked in the fifth round of the draught out of Oklahoma State University. He played for nine years in Dallas and left in 1974, ranking third in the NFL in rushing and fourth in receiving. In Dallas’s all-time list, he is still fourth with 4,32 yards per run and ninth with 3,491 yards rushed.
The thing that made Garrison the best cowboy, though, was his rodeo job, which he called his “first love.” During his first season, the Cowboys said he would go out after team meetings and participate in local rodeos as a steer wrestler. He would then get back to the hotel before the 11 p.m. limit.
Garrison was said to have said, “I wasn’t starting.” “The only thing I did was cover for the kamikaze squad and return punts and kicks.” You might even hurt yourself more on them than on rodeos. The Cowboys thought a lot about it, but I didn’t.”
Soon, Dallas Coach Tom Landry stopped the side jobs during the season. But Garrison kept playing during the off-season.
Let the great rest in peace!
