Lionel Messi finally made his start with the Major League Soccer team Inter Miami. He did so with the kind of flair that only the best player in the world could make.
Messi scored the game-winning goal in the final seconds of the second half of Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup. The game was played at the sold-out DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in front of a crowd of more than 40,000 people.
“I saw what the goal was. Messi said on the Apple TV show after the game, “When I saw the goal, I knew I had to score.” “It was the last play of the game, and I wanted to score so we didn’t have to go to penalties. Since this was a new competition, it was very important for us to win. This will give us hope for the future.
Leagues Cup is a yearly game between MLS and Liga MX. This year, the tournament was made bigger so that all teams from each league could take part.
Messi came into the game in the 54th minute, when Inter Miami had a 1-0 lead and Argentina had just won the World Cup.
Cruz Azul tied the game in the 65th minute, which made Messi’s game-winning goal possible.
After a few close calls, Messi finally scored in the 94th minute to give his start a fairy-tale finish.
“As soon as I saw the free kick, I thought, ‘This is how you win,’ especially with players like Leo and Sergio (Busquets) on the field,'” Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham said after the game on an Apple TV show.
“This is such a great night for us, our family, everyone in this building, and you guys. It’s a big deal for this country, for this league, and for us.
Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner David Beckham, NBA great LeBron James, tennis champion Serena Williams, and reality star Kim Kardashian were all in the stands to watch him.
Inter Miami’s next Leagues Cup group stage match is on Tuesday at home toward MLS team Atlanta United.
