Dustin Johnson said he “doesn’t really care” about the people who criticised his move to LIV Golf, but he did say he still “loves” the PGA Tour.
Johnson was one of the big names that caused controversy when he joined the LIV Golf Series and left the PGA Tour. After 14 years and 24 titles on the American-based circuit and leaving the LIV, Johnson and the other players who left were all suspended from the PGA Tour.
The American reportedly got a signing fee of around £100 million, and he also won £30.7 million on the course by winning both the single and team titles in LIV’s first season.
Even though he was banned from the PGA Tour, the 38-year-old played a big part in the tour’s Netflix show “Full Swing,” both before and after he moved to LIV Golf. And since he was criticised a lot after making the switch, Johnson has fought back.
When asked in the Netflix show what he thought about people who doubted his decision to move to Saudi Arabia, the 2020 Masters winner said, “I don’t really care.” Johnson had to deal with more criticism than most when he joined Greg Norman and the others. This was likely because of his reputation on the PGA Tour and in golf in general.
But when asked why he was making the change, he said it was because he wanted to “play less and make more money.” He said, “My time on the PGA Tour has been great, and I’m very proud of it and will always be.” I’ve taken a different step in my life and career, that much is clear. The offer they made me was what made me decide to join LIV. I played less and made more money. It was pretty simple.” The 38-year-old seems to be happy with the choice he made and thinks it was the right one.
Even so, the American said he still has a soft spot for the PGA Tour. He said, “I love the PGA Tour and thought my time on it was great.” There is still a lot of bad blood between the two rival tours, and no one knows when or if they will make up.
Johnson, on the other hand, hopes that this will happen soon and has asked both the PGA Tour and LIV to “live together in peace.” He also said, “I’m very grateful for the chance, but today is a new day.” It’s not up to me, but I hope we can live together peacefully one day.”
