Trump recently put a 90-day hold on tariffs for almost all countries except China.
Speaking out in support of President Trump’s tariffs, including his claims that kids need fewer toys, Vice President J.D. Vance says that Americans could benefit from using guns made in the United States if “God forbid… your country goes to war.”
Thursday, May 8, Vance, 40, talked to Fox News reporter Martha MacCallum about Trump’s comments about his tariffs on goods from China. She said that Americans “need to become more self-reliant.”
Vance told MacCallum, “That won’t happen right away, and it won’t always be easy.” “I wouldn’t ask people if they want two dolls, five dolls, or twenty dolls for their kids. Moms and dads in the U.S., would you like to be able to go to a drugstore and know that you can get the medicines your kids need?”
As an American parent, would you like to — God forbid, if your country goes to a war and your son or daughter is sent off to fight—would you like to know that the weapons that they have are good, American-made stuff, not made by a foreign adversary?” Vance went on.
Before Vance’s interview, Trump talked about his taxes on foreign goods at a meeting of his cabinet on April 30.
Someone told me the shelves would be open. Okay, so maybe the kids will only have two toys instead of thirty. When asked how the tariffs might continue to affect the U.S. market, Trump said, “Maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally.

But we’re not talking about something where we’ll have to go out of our way,” he said. Their ships are full of things we don’t need.” We need to make a fair deal too. Every country in the world has ripped us off, but I think China beats them all.
Trump raised the taxes to 145% at the beginning of April. This week, Bloomberg said that cargo exports from China have dropped by about 60%. A new study from the U.S. Commerce Department, released at the start of May, showed that the American economy shrank by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025.
Also, on Wednesday, after days of saying he wouldn’t change his mind about his massive, market-crashing tariff plan, Trump said he would put a 90-day hold on the tariffs for almost all countries, except China, whose import tax was raised to 125%.
After making the news, Trump talked to reporters at the White House about why he did what he did.
“I thought some people were going too far… It seemed like they were getting antsy and scared, he said.
Trump went on, “We have a big job to do.” “No other president would have done what I did…” No one else. The leaders I know wouldn’t have done it.
