‘Free Palestine’ chants broke up the NFL’s moment of silence for Israel.

There was a moment of silence for Israel on Sunday during an NFL game in London between the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans. Chants of “Free Palestine” could be heard.

The United States considers Hamas to be a terrorist group. On October 7, they led the largest Palestinian insurgent attack on Israel in history. As a result, Israel fired its most powerful missiles ever on Gaza. The Associated Press said that more than 1,300 people had been killed in Israel by Sunday. The AP said that the Gaza Health Ministry said more than 2,300 people had died in Gaza.

Since the attack, groups around the world, both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian, have used social media and real-life events to say what they think about the conflict. This has made people on both sides very angry.

The NFL chose to hold a moment of silence for Israel before the game. But shouts of “Free Palestine” soon broke the silence, according to a video shared on YouTube. Both the video and the chants that Newsweek heard at the game were checked by the news organization.

“They just tried to do a minute’s silence for Israel at the NFL in London,” wrote @NatVanChudleigh on X, which used to be Twitter. Because so many people were yelling “Free Palestine,” it was cut off after eight seconds. It was so completely expected.”

But in an email to Newsweek on Sunday, NFL head of communications Morgan Rubin said the moment of silence went as planned and wasn’t cut short.

“The moment before the game today in London was the same as the ones held today in the U.S. and last Thursday night.” It all went as planned at the London event; it wasn’t cut short. He said, “This was not a minute of silence, it was a moment of silence.”

ABC’s Adam Schefter said earlier that “NFL teams will hold a moment of silence before each game this week for the victims who have been killed in the Hamas attack on Israel.”

Along with asking for peace in a statement on Monday, the NFL also spoke out against the attack.

“The NFL mourns the loss of innocent lives in Israel and strongly condemns all forms of terrorism,” it said. “We can’t understand how bad these actions were, and our hearts go out to the families of those who died, were hurt, or are still missing.” We pray for peace and will always fight against hate.

The break was made to bring attention to the Free Palestine movement. On Saturday, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters took to the streets across the UK, including in London and Manchester.

According to BBC News, more than 1,000 police officers were sent to London as protesters called for an end to Israel’s military action in the Gaza Strip. The protesters marched from BBC News’ Broadcasting House to 10 Downing Street, which is the official home and office of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Tensions are rising around the world because of the ongoing conflict. In the United States, big places like New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta are seeing protests and counter-protests as people try to figure out how to react to the violence.

The Chiefs, the New York Giants, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Philadelphia Eagles are just a few of the teams that have spoken out against the war. The NFL has also spoken out.
