AP reports that in AL RAYYAN, Qatar, When she officiated the game between Australia and India on Saturday, Yoshimi Yamashita was the first woman to do so at the Asian Cup.

For the Group B game at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, the Japanese official had two female helpers with her. They were both Japanese, Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi.

A football federation in Asia called it a “landmark appointment.”

Yamashita, who is 37 years old and got her FIFA refereeing badge in 2015, was Japan’s first official female referee. She has worked games in the AFC Cup, Asian Champions League, and Japan’s top division.

In 2022, she was one of 36 judges at the World Cup, but she didn’t run any games. Instead, she worked as a fourth judge for six games at the tournament, which was also held in Qatar.

FIFA has called Yamashita a “trailblazer.” She has also been a judge at two Women’s World Cups and the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Career: She was one of six women chosen to be referees at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Along with Stephanie Frappart and Salima Mukansanga, she was one of the first three women ever to be named as possible centre referees in the history of the men’s World Cup. She started working as a fourth official in the FIFA World Cup when Belgium played Canada in Group F. She worked as a fourth official in six other World Cup games as well.[needs reference]

In 2022, Yamashita was the first female referee to work a game in both the AFC Champions League for men and the J1 League for women. She was in charge of Melbourne City’s 2–1 win over Chunnam Dragons and FC Tokyo’s 2–0 win over Kyoto Sanga.

Yamashita was the centre referee for the first group-stage game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which took place on July 19, 2023, between Norway and co-hosts New Zealand’s women’s national football team. A video assistant referee review led to a penalty kick being given, and Yamashita gave the first in-stadium account of a video-reviewed decision in the history of women’s international football.
